How Cabozantinib works: Cabozantinib functions by inhibiting the action of an abnormal protein that stimulates the proliferation of cancer cells, thereby slowing or halting the spread of cancer cells.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Cabozantinib include fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth), high blood pressure, decreased appetite, taste changes, low blood platelets, anemia (low number of red blood cells), palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia syndrome, weight loss, increased liver enzymes, and dyspepsia.

  • Cabozantinib is used for the treatment of thyroid cancer.
  • Take it with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.
  • Diarrhea may occur as a side effect; drink plenty of fluids and inform your doctor if it does not stop or if you notice blood in your stools.
  • Use a reliable contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication and for one month after discontinuation.
  • Monitor your blood pressure regularly while on this medication.
  • Inform your doctor if you experience symptoms of very high blood pressure, such as:
    • Severe headache
    • Confusion
    • Vision problems
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
  • This medication may cause serious bleeding problems; inform your doctor if you experience:
    • Headaches
    • Stomach pain
    • Blood in your urine or stools
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.
