Betamethasone is a steroid medication that blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) responsible for making the skin red, swollen, and itchy. Gentamicin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required for vital bacterial functions. Tolnaftate is an antifungal that stops the growth of fungi by inhibiting their ability to form protective coverings. Clioquinol (Iodochlorhydroxyquin) is an antibiotic with additional antifungal properties, working to prevent the growth and multiplication of both bacteria and fungi.
Common side effects of Betamethasone, Gentamicin, Tolnaftate, Clioquinol (Iodochlorhydroxyquin), and Chlorocresol include itching, irritation, erythema (skin redness), and a burning sensation at the site of application.
