How Hydroquinone, Octinoxate, and Benzophenone Work Hydroquinone, Octinoxate, and Benzophenone is a combination of three medicines: Hydroquinone, Octinoxate, and Benzophenone. Hydroquinone is a skin lightening agent that reduces the amount of melanin, the skin pigment responsible for darkening. This effect is reversible. Octinoxate and Benzophenone are organic compounds that absorb ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, protecting the skin from damage.
