Benzocaine is a local anesthetic that works by blocking pain signals from the nerves to the brain, which decreases pain sensation in the mouth. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that eliminates bacteria and other microorganisms responsible for gum disease, ulcers, and other mouth infections by damaging bacterial DNA.
