Amifostine Uses Amifostine is used to prevent dryness in the mouth following radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. It is also utilized to reduce the harmful effects of chemotherapy on the kidneys during treatment with cisplatin.

How Amifostine works Amifostine functions by eliminating free radicals, which are harmful elements generated by cisplatin (a medication used to treat cancer) or radiation therapy in tissues.

Common side effects of Amifostine include nausea, vomiting, decreased blood pressure, hiccups, sleepiness, dizziness, flushing (a sense of warmth in the face, ears, neck, and trunk), fever, and chills.
