How Alpelisib works Alpelisib treats cancer by blocking the signals that cause cancer cells to multiply, helping to stop the spread of these cells.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Alpelisib include increased glucose levels in the blood, diarrhea, rash, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, increased creatinine levels in the blood, lymphocytopenia, increased gamma-glutamyltransferase, increased alanine aminotransferase, decreased hemoglobin, increased lipase in the blood, decreased appetite, stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth), weight loss, hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level), decreased calcium levels in the blood, prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and hair loss.

Expert Advice

  • After starting your treatment with Alpelisib, you may be at risk of infection; therefore, try to avoid crowds or individuals with colds.
  • Report fever or any other signs of infection immediately to your doctor.
  • Drink at least two to three quarts of fluid every 24 hours, unless instructed otherwise.
  • To reduce nausea, take antinausea medications as prescribed by your doctor and eat small, frequent meals.
  • Inform your doctor if you notice any signs or symptoms of allergic reactions, such as rash or shortness of breath, after taking Alpelisib.
  • Monitor your sugar levels at intervals and report to your doctor if they are abnormally high; your doctor will provide further guidance on this.
  • Consume foods that may help reduce diarrhea and ensure you get adequate rest.
  • Use a soft toothbrush and rinse your mouth at least three times a day with saline water to help treat or prevent mouth sores.
