Alcohol is used as a preservative.
How Alcohol Works Alcohol stimulates GABA at GABA-A receptors and inhibits the opening of NMDA receptor channels by preventing glutamate. As an antidote, it inhibits the rapid metabolism of methanol to toxic intermediates, such as formaldehyde and formic acid, due to its greater affinity for alcohol dehydrogenase. Thus, the toxicity of methanol is delayed or, to some extent, hindered.
Common side effects of alcohol include nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, tremors, impaired judgment, visual impairment, impaired coordination, slurred speech, and nystagmus (involuntary eye movement).
