Acetazolamide

Uses

Acetazolamide is used in the treatment of glaucoma.

How it Works

How Acetazolamide works Acetazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It functions in glaucoma by reducing the production of aqueous humor (the fluid in the eye), thereby lowering elevated intraocular pressure.

Expert Advice

  • Acetazolamide helps lower high pressure in the eye and reduces the risk of vision loss.
  • For best results, instill one drop 2-3 times daily in the affected eye(s).
  • Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute immediately after instilling the drop to minimize the risk of side effects.
  • Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface or to your eye to avoid contaminating the eye drops.
  • Remove contact lenses before using Acetazolamide and wait at least 15 minutes before re-inserting them.
  • When applying multiple eye medications, wait for at least 5-15 minutes before administering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution of the medicine.

Frequently asked questions

Acetazolamide lowers intraocular pressure, reducing the risk of optic nerve damage and potential blindness. It effectively manages ocular hypertension and certain types of glaucoma by decreasing eye pressure.
Acetazolamide should not be taken by individuals with cirrhosis, severe liver or kidney disease, electrolyte imbalances, adrenal gland failure, or allergies to Acetazolamide or sulfa drugs. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult their doctor to prevent harm to the baby.
Acetazolamide is effective when taken as prescribed by your doctor. Do not discontinue use prematurely, as this may result in a return or worsening of symptoms.
You should not stop taking Acetazolamide without consulting your doctor, as early discontinuation may lead to a return or worsening of symptoms. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage and duration for optimal results.
If you miss a dose of Acetazolamide, take it as soon as you remember. If it's close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
