Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s is a prescription anticoagulant medication containing of Apixaban. It belongs to a class of drugs known as Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs) and specifically acts as a factor Xa inhibitor. It is used to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation and to treat or prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). By "thinning" the blood, it helps prevent the formation of dangerous blood clots.
Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s is a highly selective, reversible, oral direct inhibitor of factor Xa, composed of Apixaban. It represents a modern advancement in antithrombotic therapy, offering a more predictable and convenient alternative to older anticoagulants like warfarin.
Composition and Mechanism: Each film-coated tablet contains of Apixaban. The medication works by directly inhibiting factor Xa, a key enzyme located at the convergence point of the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of the coagulation cascade. By blocking factor Xa, Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s inhibits the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. Since thrombin is the enzyme that converts fibrinogen to fibrin (the "mesh" that forms a clot), Apixaban effectively prevents thrombus formation and development.
Major Therapeutic Uses: The primary use of Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s is for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in adult patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib). It is also used to treat Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE), as well as to prevent recurrence of these conditions. Additionally, it is prescribed for thromboprophylaxis following hip or knee replacement surgery.
Benefits and Precautions: A significant benefit of Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s is that it does not require routine blood monitoring (like INR tests) or strict dietary restrictions. It has shown a lower risk of significant bleeding, particularly intracranial haemorrhage, compared to warfarin in many clinical settings. However, precautions are critical regarding bleeding risks because they prevent clotting, and even minor injuries can result in significant blood loss. It must be used with caution in patients with severe kidney or liver impairment.
Medical Supervision and Risks: Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s must be taken under strict medical supervision. Patients must be monitored for any signs of internal or external bleeding. The most significant risk is the potential for life-threatening haemorrhage. Furthermore, a "Black Box Warning" exists regarding the risk of spinal or epidural hematomas in patients receiving spinal anaesthesia, and the risk of thrombotic events if the medication is discontinued prematurely without a suitable replacement.
Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s (Apixaban 5mg) is indicated for:
Reducing the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
Treating blood clots in the veins of the legs (Deep Vein Thrombosis).
Treating blood clots in the lungs (Pulmonary Embolism).
Preventing DVT and PE from happening again after initial treatment.
Preventing blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery.
Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s provides a highly effective and predictable way to prevent life-threatening blood clots. By targeting Factor Xa directly, it offers a consistent level of anticoagulation that does not fluctuate with your diet or the intake of green leafy vegetables. This medicinal benefit allows patients to live a more normal lifestyle without the constant need for "blood-thinning" clinic visits or painful finger-prick tests.
One of the key advantages of the 5mg dose is its superior safety profile in preventing strokes compared to traditional therapies. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Apixaban is effective in preventing thromboembolism and carries a reduced risk of major bleeding complications, particularly intracranial haemorrhage. This makes it a preferred choice for elderly patients or those at higher risk of bleeding who still require robust protection against stroke.
Furthermore, Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s is highly convenient due to its rapid onset of action. It begins working within a few hours of the first dose, providing immediate protection. It also has a predictable "offset," meaning its effects wear off relatively quickly if it must be discontinued for planned surgery. For patients with Type 2 Diabetes or stable heart disease, Apixaban integrates well into complex medication regimens without the myriad of drug-drug interactions seen with older anticoagulants.
Does not usually affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Not recommended. May increase the risk of bleeding during pregnancy and delivery.
Limit alcohol, as heavy drinking increases the risk of stomach bleeding and falls (which can cause internal bleeding).
No significant food interactions. You do not need to avoid vitamin K-rich foods (like spinach).
Avoid contact sports or activities that carry a high risk of injury or falls.
Store Apigat 5mg Tablet 30s at room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Keep the tablets in their original packaging to prevent moisture damage. Keep out of the reach of children.
Increases the risk of severe bleeding significantly. Avoid unless specifically prescribed by your doctor.
Can increase the levels of Apixaban in your body, leading to a higher risk of bleeding.
Can decrease the levels of Apixaban, thereby reducing its effectiveness in preventing thrombosis.
May reduce the protection provided by Apixaban.
The dosage is usually standardised but can be adjusted by your doctor.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. Resume your twice-daily schedule thereafter. Do not take two tablets at the same time to make up for a missed dose. If you are unsure, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
